Tadweer starts ops at newly-revamped compost plant in Abu Dhabi
Abu Dhabi Waste Management Center (Tadweer) has announced the launch of operations at Liwa Compost Plant in Al Dhafra region of the emirate following a refurbishment to improve its production efficiency.
With a capacity to produce 20,000 tonnes of compost annually, the facility recycles agricultural and animal waste generated by farms and ranches in Al Dhafra region and turns it to high-quality organic fertilizer that comply with the requirements of the Ministry of Climate Change and Environment (MOCCAE).
The compost plant caters to the daily needs of municipal projects, farms and palm oases in Al Dhafra region, providing them with the required quantities of organic fertilizer, said the statement from Tadweer.
Tadweer is the key government entity responsible for all activities related to the development of waste management services in Abu Dhabi, including the collection, transportation, treatment and disposal of waste in a safe, efficient and economical manner.
An eco-friendly alternative to chemical fertilizer, organic fertilizer helps improve soil fertility, reduce water consumption, and contribute to environmental protection, it stated.
The production process at Liwa Compost Plant was improved as part of Tadweer’s continued efforts to protect the emirate's environment and promote its sustainable development.
The centre collaborated with Barari Natural Resources to manage the facility and enhance its production capacity in line with the latest technical standards. These efforts articulate Tadweer’s keenness to set up state-of-the-art recycling facilities to achieve its sustainability goals, it added.
Tadweer Director General Dr Salem Al Kaabi said: 'The refurbishment of Liwa Compost Plant articulates our holistic vision to protect the environment and promote eco-friendly practices in the management of agricultural and animal waste.'
'In adopting the latest international standards in compost production, the plant reduces the need to import chemical fertilizers, and gives a strong boost to eco-friendly manufacturing industries, he noted.
'In increasing the capacity of Liwa Compost Plant, Tadweer seeks to bring about a paradigm shift in integrated waste management, while supporting the sustainable development goals outlined by Abu Dhabi Vision 2030,' he added.
