Review: Tarun Tahilani's ''Tarakini'' collection at Lakme Fashion Week

It seemed very au courant, but more than that it managed to be delicate yet decadent

It is has been a week when everyone has been talking about the moon --- thanks to the Super Blue Cold moon, all things cosmic have been top of mind lately. So Tarun Tahilani's 'Tarakini' collection at Lakme Fashion Week inspired by the stars, seemed very au courant, but more than that it managed to be delicate yet decadent. This was for the modern bride, who wants to dance away on her a special night in an ensemble that is both glamorous and elegant. Yes, there was lots of glitter thanks to the use of Swarovski crystals, but nothing felt overdone. Light gossamer fabrics and galaxy inspired embellishments ensured there was a feminine floaty feel to this very pretty and poised collection. Tarun has always referred to Mughal costumes and this collection was no different with its use of drape and volume but its lightness made it seem very fresh and contemporary. With a colour palate that went from Midnight Blue to Sunshine Gold, it was romantic yet seductive --- and while there was plenty of embellishment it was still easy. This was for the girl who understands how to buy clothes that are investments --- as you could dress them up and wear them for your own wedding, or keep your jewellery minimal and then wear for a family or close friend's wedding. And coming out dressed like a bride in a blush lengha with large floral motifs was Kriti Sanon in a lengha which had a demure half-sleeved blouse teamed with a lengha, and a diaphanous duputta ensured there was a sensuality to the ensemble. And it is this understanding of balance between being subtle but making statement that has made Tarun Tahiliani one of India's leading designers.

And though just a couple of hours before both Karan Johar and Sonakshi Sinha had taken to the catwalk making a 'special' appearance at Falguni and Shane Peacock's show, it was Tarun's Tarakini that has so far been one the 'star' collections of Mumbai's Lakme Fashion Week.
