The UAE's largest telecom operator etisalat's $2 billion (Dh7.34 billion) share buyback will take place over the next two years, international ratings agency S&P Global said.

The telecom major had announced its intention to buy up to 5 per cent of its paid-up capital, or 434.8 million shares, in March 2018.

Its shares gained 2.1 per cent on Thursday in line with the surge in Abu Dhabi index.

Etisalat announced the launch of the Mena region’s first Apple Watch Series 3 (GPS +Cellular), with smart pay offers.

Apple Watch Series 3 comes in two models, one with GPS and cellular, and one with GPS, both featuring a 70 per cent faster dual-core processor. Etisalat is the first UAE operator in the Mena region to offer the eSIM function over Apple Watch cellular. For customers to enjoy the cellular capability on the new watch, they need to pay Dhs 25 per month to enable the eSIM on their Apple watches.

Etisalat today announced that its roaming packages (both data and voice) will now include AeroMobile in-flight coverage, which promises business users connectivity when they are airborne.

SES announced today that it has been granted, by the U.S. Federal Communications Commission (FCC), authorization to serve the U.S. market using a significantly expanded O3b fleet in the Medium Earth Orbit (MEO).

The FCC grant opens significant additional frequencies to SES for use in its non-geostationary (NGSO) constellation and enables it to deploy O3b mPOWER satellites into inclined and equatorial orbits, delivering full global pole-to-pole coverage. Etisalat has reminded phone users to be vigilant of phone phishing following reports of UAE residents being hit by the ‘Wangiri scam’.

The scam occurs when people ring back a missed call from an anonymous international number, and are then routed to premium rate numbers. An automated message then plays, which cannot be disconnected unless the user switches off his phone.
